I began writing The Naked Mountain,
my novel about women when I was 24 years old.
A year later, I read The Second Sex,
the book often called
the origin of modern feminism.
I was traveling through Guizhou at the time,
sitting on a long-distance bus.
My friends were all
drifting in and out of sleep.
From the moment I boarded
until the moment I stepped off,
except for the moments when I, too,
dozed off amid the endless jolting —
I was underlining almost every page.
I was shocked, shaken, by the completeness,
depth, and sharpness of Beauvoir’s thinking.
She and I are both women,
we have lived through the same knots of pain and uncertainty —
whether to marry, whether to have children,
whether the things that were once “right” must always remain right.
I felt a profound resonance.
And from that moment on,
I sought out more feminist books and films.
I am moved by every step women before us have taken on our behalf.
And I feel a kind of sorrow for the ignorance,
arrogance, and hypocrisy of men and some women.
I had intended to write “some men,”
but deleted the word “some” —
because even my father,
who lives in my memory as a towering figure, was an inadequate man.
Perhaps it was the era he lived in, after all,
he was born before the founding of the PRC.
But the era today is different.
All information lies at our fingertips.
So in my eyes, anyone — man or woman —
who has not engaged with and reflected deeply
on feminism is an uncivilized being.
After all, if you do not understand the condition
of half the population of this planet,
how can you claim to be a good human being?

I have read and watched.
Throughout the time
I spent watching and reading,
I found myself countless times angry,
torn, moved, and deeply shaken by everything in these works.
I hope that anyone who turns to this page
will find something meaningful —
and will do your part for your mother, daughter,
friend, lover, sister, or yourself in your life.
